Using Natural Fibres 

1700

The 1700s saw the use of natural materials such as cotton, linen and wool, which were decorated with fabric manipulations for aesthetic appeal.

Introduction Of Artificial Material

1800

Although natural materials were still generally relied on, 1846 saw the development of the synthetic fibre Rayon, as well as artificial silk made from mulberry trees as an inexpensive alternative to silk.

This century saw the development of new materials, including synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon and elastane which developed the underwear industry significantly, providing materials to stretch and shape the body.

Although synthetic materials are still very much in use, researchers today are working towards developing innovative materials, including recycling synthetic waste and creating materials from natural resources, to tackle the issue synthetics have had upon our environment.

We are an online education platform striving for a sustainable future. The environmental and social issues surrounding the fashion industry are catastrophic, with research highlighting the gravity of this problem. It is our aim to educate and make people aware of just how impactful our behaviour as consumers can be, to inform more sustainable practices going forward.
